Styling 101: Androgyny

Hey peeps! I am introducing a new and fun addition to my blog - STYLING 101. Here, I will feature real people who a simple yet eclectic style to them.

In today's styling 101, I focused on Androgyny*. This is hard to pull off especially when you don't have a specific idea or pieces to put it together. However, I feel the combination of pieces that I have chosen bring the look together fabulously. What do you think?

*Androgyny: neither clearly masculine nor clearly feminine in appearance.

My model for the day is my friend Caira Nicolas. We were in karaoke mode when I got the inspiration that she should be my first model in my new blog addition; the perfect choice!

Her stats are as follows:
Age - 15 years old
Lives in - Vancouver, B.C
Height - 170CM (5'7")
Weight - 123 lbs
Hair color - Black
Skin color - Tan
She loves Asian TV series/movies/music etc.
She is playful, fun, witty.

For her outfit, I combined the pieces you could see in my looks on lookbook.nu/josefflopez :

I love how this outfit turned out, (the fact that this is my favorite) it's amazing. I was jumping out for joy when I see the outfit on her because she doesn't really style but, this brought out the style in her.

I could have done something more to her look, like I could put a cap on her head or did some make-up; however, I decided to just make it simple so people could see her beauty and the edginess of the look.

Here are more photos of her from the photo shoot we did today:
Androgyny look - accomplished! ;)

PS: I had a photo shoot the night after with the same outfit, which you could check out on - http://lookbook.nu/look/2490369-Project-Styling-1-1

Hello world! This is one of my most-liked and loved outfit on LookBook and I want to share it to you guys!

The pieces on this outfit was a random pick. I was asked by my friends for a photo shoot that day (August 31, 2011) in the morning and I was late, so I tried to get everything I see on my closet just to catch up. And fortunately, I ended up with a PERFECT combination - which what most people say on this outfit.

I liked the outfit's approach and appeal to me and to other people too. It's like if ever it was displayed in a store, I would definitely buy it. It is just sad to say that I couldn't wear the shorts at the moment because of the chilly weather, but I will try to find a pants within the same color or I'm thinking about putting leggings under since the trend 'short-over-leggings' is still in. :)

Featured: Too cool for school

School is back! Summer vacation for students is over; and for sure their lazy times will strike back. Students would for sure look forward in having their binders, line papers, bags, pens, and pencils to be their first priority in hand. However, school fashion is never forgotten. Students give their best to look good at school - as many people say, "dress to impress." They use fashion as something that they would be proud for and to have the confidence they need to shine not only as a student but also as an individual.

This is what I miss the most - dressing up everyday for school. For me, being cool for school is a must - because you get the attention you want but not only that, it is also a way to get respect and students make you their role model. My school year 2010-2011 brought me the Fashion EXPERIENCE. I was just a simple boy when I first started highschool in Canada. Back from the Philippines, I never really care on what I wear but I care about my look - as long as what I'm wearing suits me, then everything is fine!

Before, baggy jeans, graphic tees, and sneakers were my basic fashion style. But when I came here, fashion inspired me and it is a part of me now. Having the right sense of clothing, colors, and style would give you the complete package you've been wanting. However, I believe that you don't have to learn something about fashion first to know how to dress up; you just have to be yourself and know what you like then everything will follow. :)

So, I went to my school last Friday (Septmeber 9, 2011) to chat with my friends whom I haven't seen for a long time. It was pretty hot but windy that day and it gave me excitement as I see students wearing chic and 'cool for school' clothing. Actually, I was tagged as the 'Mr. Fashionable' in school and that was one of the huge compliments I got and I am thankful for that. So, I tried to look for 'Fashionistas' in the school that day and I saw tons; although I didn't get much photos of the students because I was in a hurry, these girls caught me because of their simple but fancy-colorful outfits.

Andrea Caampued: She is wearing a pink-gray stripes round neck drape top matched with a brown rolled-up shorts and a black flats, which she accessorized with a necklace and a watch. *Well, this girl knows how to style. :)

Scharlyn Llamas: I liked her Leopard print shirt - it's very distinct and it will really get your attention. She paired it up with skinny jeans, accessorized with tribal bracelet/s, and loafer shoes. Her black bag pack adds a twist within the outfit. *Safari mode! :D

Viva Song: Her tee is unique - I love the graphic design and it is over-sized. The style is very comfy and she pulled it off. It's simple and playful.

Note: These girls were very shy when I took them photos; they blocked their faces with the use of their hands. HA! :P

Fashion in school should be just fine. Don't be over the top and just stay on the line; try to 'fit' in the school vibe, be funky, and enjoy life because Paris Hilton once said,"The only rule is don't be boring and dress cute wherever you go. Life is too short to blend in."

Stand up, be proud for yourself. :)

The Blogger's Thought: "Fashion is more about you than about your preferred brand."

"We often think of fashion in terms of chic brands. Louis Vuitton, Fendi, Versace; these are some of the temples of fashion. Fashionistas splash their wealth on famous fashion brands. But that doesn't mean the ordinary person on the street does not have a fashion sense. Fashion is more about you than about your preferred brand. Materialism is passé. Fashion is a personal style statement. So go ahead and create your fashion signature."

I was searching for fashion quotes on the net then surprisingly, I saw this site. I was mesmerized and amazed on what the author said about fashion - which is really true. I got inspired to what he wrote because we have the same perception about fashion.

Yes, it is not all about the labels but it is about the person who creates his fashion style. Most of us think that having a Prada, Gucci, Mikel Kors, and other famous brands is being fashionable; however, we are having the wrong thought about it. Every person has a certain style and has their own taste of fashion. Your clothes, accessories should not always be expensive to say that you are a certified fashionsita but as long as you have the 'STYLE' in you and you are confident with what you wear and who you are - then you are the bomb.

I don't mean to say that I disagree in buying fashion brands because it is expensive; well, it is a big part of the fashion industry and I do also follow some of it but my point is, fashion should not be just centered on the fashion labels; and like what Coco Chanel said, "Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

THE THOUGHT: Fashion is EVERYWHERE, it is in YOU. Shine and be proud.

PS: I bought my very first fashion magazine, which is ELLE (September Issue).
I liked how the magazine covers the latest trends and talks deeply about fashion and fashion designers. They gave me new fashion ideas, and motivation to work more on my fashion styling dream. 5 stars for the magazine; grab and get one!

Trend: FALL for it!

Welcome Fall! - the season of knits are back! It is the season of the year between summer and winter, lasting from September to December where you could feel the wind's breeze and see the changing color of the leaves. Knits are must have in the fall season. A a needle work created by interlacing yarn in a series of connected loops using straight eyeless needles or by machine.

There are actually different types of knits:

Double Knit - a knit fabric similar to jersey that is made with two sets of needles producing a double thickness joined by interlocking stitches

Jersey - a slightly elastic machine-knit fabric

Stockinette - knit used especially for infants' wear and undergarments

Tricot - a knitted fabric or one resembling knitting

These are some of the ideas from my Textiles class and credits to Google for the photos! :)
And of course, I have my very own set of knits that I got from various shops mostly in Vintage.

This is my 'it' Fall collection, which one must have. It may not be perfect but having the right pieces combined with these knits, it would make you glamorous! Here are some of my collection:

These clothes are so comfortable to wear and it is very warm for such a chilly weather like what we have today.

Both purple-like in color, the cardigan knitted sweater (from USED Vintage in Vancouver DT) and the knitted vest (Forever 21) are one of my favorites. They complement each other and it is very chic to wear. I find it playful too where I could match them up with a scarf, a polo shirt, or with a blazer.

The one in the left is not a knit but it is woven perfectly and it is fit for the Fall season. It has purple petals' print and its unique style outshines other kinds of polo (from Report Collection in Tip Top Tailors Metrotown, B.C).

And the one in the left - the best knit I got is this earth-toned deep V-neck sweater which plays the colors of brown and khaki (from USED Vintage in Vancouver). I like how distinct the style is and its individuality as a knit sweater catches the attention of the people and it's really fun to style, pairing it up with a polo/polo shirt underneath to make it more interesting.
*I have a modeling-like video of me wearing this knit, so watch out for that! :D

Knits are very quirky, fancy, and playful in the eyes. You could style it fashionably with the right colors and clothing that matches with it. You just have to be innovative in every way, and you will stand out among the rest! Have fun shopping guys!
